March 3, 2020: BIREME celebrates 53 years in favor of access to health information

BIREME timeline

On March 3, 1967, BIREME/PAHO/WHO was established in Brazil through its 1st Maintenance Agreement, formalized between PAHO/WHO and the Government of Brazil represented by national institutions, of which, to the present date, the Ministry of Health remains as one of the main institutional supporters of the Center. As of 2010, BIREME relies on its Statute, which, through its two Governance Committees, has members and experts from Latin America and the Caribbean countries. It has been 53 years contributing to the access to information and knowledge in health for several other countries besides those in the Region of the Americas. The Virtual Health Library Network and its main sources of information, the Latin American Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) and Health Science Descriptors (DeSC), information and scientific communication products and services continue to characterize and strengthen BIREME's mission.
