Syphilis continues to pose a significant public health challenge in the Region of the Americas. In recent years, there has been a steady increase in the incidence of both syphilis and congenital syphilis, disproportionately affecting pregnant women, newborns, and vulnerable populations. In this context, having up-to-date epidemiological information is key to informing decision-making.
The PAHO/WHO syphilis estimation tool has been designed as a tool for countries to use to collate and review their syphilis data and to generate estimates of:
- Syphilis prevalence (%) in different populations over time
- National prevalence (%) and incidence (cases and rate) of syphilis over time
- Congenital syphilis cases and rates per 1000 live births over time
The tool has also been structured to collect data on reported syphilis cases, syphilis related policies, and syphilis testing coverage.
