Publications Internship

 

The Pan American Health Organization recognizes the importance of a new generation of public health leaders who have an understanding of global health issues and the role of international organizations in achieving the SDGs and other health issues. In this regard, the PAHO Internship Program trains young and energetic individuals interested in providing services to the Organization on a voluntary basis, also known as internships/practicums. PAHO interns are "trainees" matched with appropriate technical units based upon the individual's interests and skills. Placements are in the Washington, DC Headquarters or one of the PAHO country offices or scientific centers in the Region of the Americas and the Caribbean.

The Publications Team is looking for interns to help in a variety of publishing-related tasks in the Washington, D.C. Headquarters.

Under the guidance of the Spanish and English Editors, the intern will be asked to work in the following areas:

1.     Coordination of editorial projects: 

  • Assist with the monitoring of editorial projects
  • Review manuscripts and proofs following the specifications of the editors
  • Review original graphic material
  • Generate status reports of publications in development
  • Follow up with authors on projects according to the instructions of the editors

2.     Drafting of guidelines and tools:

  • Support in the revision and drafting of guidelines and tools to be used as references on the Publications website

3.     Assist with the tracking of publications and related products:

  • Update existing records in the tracking system
  • Coordinate with in-house staff to ensure projects are meeting deadlines

4.     Marketing and dissemination:

  • Draft blurbs, proposed social media posts, and other promotional materials

5.     Assist with the production of learning materials

  • Draft materials for training courses on various aspects of publishing for internal audiences

6.     Other duties as needed
 

Requirements:

  • Meet the PAHO internship program requirements
  • University coursework and/or practical experience in Communications, Digital Media, Journalism, Marketing or other related fields.
  • Excellent written and spoken command of English and/or Spanish
  • Interest in publishing and editorial processes
  • Strong writing skills; able to draft, rewrite, and edit in English and/or Spanish
  • Interest in pursuing a career in international development or public health, particularly in Publishing, Communications, or Knowledge Management
  • Teamwork skills; sensitivity to working in a multicultural environment
  • Practical experience would be an asset

Payment:

Internships are unpaid. We offer a challenging and broad experience, where the interns will be able to acquire a full insight into the different areas of publishing in an international organization. In turn, interns will receive valuable training that can be featured on CVs and future job applications.
