Project Background
The Ministry of Health received the approval for the continuation of the FCTC 2030 project for the period June 2022- December 2023.
The FCTC 2030 project supports Parties to accelerate the implementation of the WHO FCTC, the evidence-based tobacco control treaty, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project is led by the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC in partnership with WHO and UNDP, with additional support from civil society experts and academic institutions. It is delivered through funding provided by the Governments of the United Kingdom, Australia, and Norway. The core elements are to provide targeted support to a selected number of low- and middle-income countries that have demonstrated considerable motivation to advance tobacco control.
Suriname ratified the WHO FCTC in 2008. In 2013, the comprehensive tobacco act came into effect, mandating implementation of key effective measures as established in the Strategy and Plan of Action to strengthen tobacco control in the Americas 2018-2022. The continuation phase includes working on the Phase 2 strategic objectives:
- Implementation of tobacco control governance, in accordance with WHO FCTC Art. 5.
- Enactment and implementation of tobacco control legislation that is currently under development or consideration.
- Strengthening of tobacco taxation policies, in accordance with WHO FCTC Art. 6.
- Implementation of time-bound measures, in accordance with WHO FCTC Art. 8, 11 and 13 and/or implementation of plain/standardized packaging for tobacco
