High out-of-pocket expenditures affect health and economic development
On December 12, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) joins the global commemoration of Universal Health Day (known internationally as Universal Health Coverage Day), a moment to renew our commitment to the right to health for all people, leaving no one behind.
In the Region of the Americas, millions of people continue to face financial barriers that limit their timely access to quality health services. For many families, high out-of-pocket health expenditures represent a financial burden that can affect their well-being, reduce the resources available for other essential needs, and contribute to persistent cycles of inequality.
Achieving universal health requires strong health systems that are people- and community-centered, with comprehensive services grounded in primary health care. Investing in health not only saves lives, but it is also a strategic decision to drive social and economic development, reduce inequities, and strengthen the resilience of our countries.
On this Universal Health Day, PAHO calls for renewed efforts to advance toward equitable, accessible health systems that provide financial protection for all.
