Introduction Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most complex and urgent public health challenges facing the Region of the Americas. It undermines the effectiveness of life-saving medicines, increases morbidity and mortality, compromises the safety and quality of health care, and imposes substantial social and economic costs. The drivers and impacts of AMR extend beyond human health, affecting animal health, plant health, food systems, water and sanitation, and environmental sustainability. Effectively addressing AMR requires sustained, coordinated actions across multiple sectors through a One Health approach in which the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health is recognized. |
