Development of human resources for health information systems in the Americas: Regional workshop. Panama City, 11–15 September 2023. Meeting report

Cover Development of human resources for health information systems

Human resources for health information systems (HRHIS) are essential for efficiently managing healthcare personnel and formulating evidence-based policies. However, many countries face challenges in integrating these systems, which hinders workforce planning and monitoring. The fragmentation of data poses a challenge that can be overcome through better coordination with the National Health Workforce Accounts (NHWA). In September 2023, a workshop on HRHIS was held with more than 90 participants from 35 countries and territories. During the event, significant gaps were identified in the development and governance of these systems, highlighting the need for cooperation tailored to each country’s needs. A key topic was the mapping of health occupations, with emphasis on the importance of consistent categorization to optimize the management of human resources. HRHIS maturity levels were also discussed, and experiences were exchanged on the challenges and opportunities to strengthen these systems. The need to invest in technology and training to meet the growing demands of the sector was highlighted. The mapping of key stakeholders in human resources management was also discussed, with a view to promoting collaboration and enhancing governance. The workshop fostered cooperation among countries by facilitating the exchange of knowledge and the development of guidance and other materials aimed at supporting the advancement of HRHIS in Latin America and the Caribbean.
