Infographic - Respiratory sample collection for zoonotic influenza diagnosis (Influenza A/H5 and other zoonotic influenza viruses)
| |
This infographic provides technical guidelines for the collection, preservation, and transport of respiratory and conjunctival samples for the diagnosis of zoonotic influenza, including Influenza A/H5 viruses and other subtypes of animal origin. It establishes the use of flocked nylon swabs placed immediately in sterile viral transport medium (VTM) and the collection of nasopharyngeal and conjunctival samples, the latter being especially recommended in patients with symptoms or ocular exposure to zoonotic viruses. The document emphasizes the importance of collecting samples within the first 3 to 4 days of symptom onset, ensuring their storage at 4– r 8 °C or freezing at –70 °C, and maintaining the cold chain in accordance with IATA international transport standards. These guidelines ensure the integrity and diagnostic reliability of samples sent to national laboratories or WHO collaborating centers (CCs), strengthening global surveillance and response to zoonotic influenza outbreaks.
