Let's Talk about Health Ep. 29 - Rabies, a problem affecting only dogs?

Hablemos de Salud - Ep. 29 - Rabia, ¿Un problema solo de perros? Sebastian Oliel and two PAHO experts on rabies

Rabies remains a deadly yet entirely preventable threat. In a new episode of "Hablemos de Salud" (Let’s Talk Health), PAHO experts highlight that this zoonotic disease—transmitted primarily through the bites of infected animals—persists in the Americas. Although cases of dog-transmitted rabies have dropped dramatically thanks to decades of vaccination and surveillance, the disease continues to claim lives, and cases linked to wildlife, such as bats, pose a significant challenge.

The episode also explores the "One Health" concept, which recognizes the close interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health. Specialists emphasize that vaccinating dogs and cats, avoiding contact with unfamiliar animals, and seeking immediate medical attention following any bite are essential measures for preventing rabies. Protecting our pets is also a way to protect our families and communities.
