This regional report, Primary health care policies and organization in South America, focuses on an analysis of primary health care (PHC) in nine countries of the Region: Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. To carry out this analysis, an in-depth case review was conducted between August and December 2022, drawing on a wide range of data sources. The information presented in this report reflects the situation as of that date and explores the lessons learned in transforming health systems and implementing PHC, with particular emphasis on strategic and organizational aspects. It also addresses key issues such as political leadership, governance, financing, community engagement, and the challenges associated with creating people-centered models of care.
