Situation Report 3 Jamaica - Hurricane Melissa. 29 Oct. 2025
Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane on the southwestern coast of Jamaica at 12:00pm local time on 28 October, causing widespread devastation. As of 5:00am on 29 October, a tropical storm warning remained in effect. Extensive flooding has impacted 123 communities across the island, with Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Trelawny, Hanover, Westmoreland, and St. James identified as the most affected of the country’s 14 parishes. Three major hospitals sustained severe damage, prompting emergency evacuations at two facilities, with 71 patients awaiting evacuation from one. No additional fatalities have been reported as of the latest update. PAHO continues to support the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) in response efforts, focusing on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Post-Disaster Infrastructure Assessments, and continuity of health services. Airports remain closed pending safety assessments, and the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) remains activated at Level 3. |
