Background

Every year, from November 18 to 24, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is commemorated as part of a global initiative to raise awareness and knowledge about this issue and promote better practices to reduce the emergence and spread of resistant pathogens that affect the health of people and animals.

In this context, on November 18 at 13:00 (UTC -3), this webinar will be held as an open space to share key concepts about AMR and provide the general public with concrete answers to minimize their risk related to the inappropriate use of antimicrobials and lack of hygiene and safe food handling, among other aspects.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, this activity is coordinated by the Quadripartite Alliance, composed of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Participating Experts

  • Andrés González, Officer for Sustainable Livestock, Health and Biodiversity / One Health, FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Fabrizzio Canaval, One Health Consultant, North America Office, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
  • Pilar Ramón Pardo, Head of the Special Program on Antimicrobial Resistance, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)

About Antimicrobial Awareness Week

This year, under the slogan “Preventing antimicrobial resistance together”, the goal is to increase awareness and foster global initiatives to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR). During the week, the One Health approach is promoted through various events and activities organized worldwide to address AMR in human, animal, plant, and environmental health.

The campaign calls on all stakeholders—including governments, civil society, health professionals, veterinarians and other animal health professionals, farmers, environmental actors, and the public—to turn political commitments into concrete actions.
