Regional Webinar: DoxyPEP and Its Potential Impact on Reducing Syphilis in the Americas

Date: June 12, 2026
Time: 10:00 a.m. (Tiempo del Este)

Introduction

Syphilis continues to represent a growing public health threat in the Americas. In recent years, multiple countries have reported sustained increases in acquired syphilis, congenital syphilis, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly among key populations, men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender people, people living with HIV, and young people in urban settings.

This scenario highlights the need to strengthen comprehensive responses that combine biomedical prevention, early diagnosis, timely treatment, epidemiological surveillance, and innovative evidence-based strategies.

In this context, doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) has emerged as a promising intervention to reduce the incidence of syphilis and other bacterial STIs among populations at higher risk. Studies conducted by the University of California, San Francisco and programs implemented in San Francisco, as well as programmatic experiences in Seattle, have generated relevant evidence to help guide public health decisions. At the same time, the World Health Organization is reviewing the global evidence base and emerging normative frameworks.

Across the Americas, countries are exploring and advancing discussions on how this strategy could be incorporated into national responses. Therefore, it is timely to convene a regional space for technical and programmatic exchange.

General Objective

To promote a regional technical dialogue on DoxyPEP and its potential contribution to reducing syphilis in the Americas through the exchange of evidence, experiences, and programmatic perspectives that may help inform lines of action across the region.
