Uncorrected refractive errors are the leading cause of visual impairment worldwide, affecting school performance, work productivity, and quality of life. More than 800 million people live with uncorrected presbyopia, and limited access to eye care results in productivity losses estimated at over US$244 billion each year.
To address these challenges, WHO launched the SPECS 2030 Initiative to support countries in reaching global targets for refractive error and cataract coverage by 2030.
In the Americas, major inequities persist, especially among rural, Indigenous, and low-income populations. The regional launch of SPECS 2030 will promote policies and actions to integrate eye health into primary health care, strengthen the health workforce, expand education, reduce financial barriers, and improve surveillance.
