Evidence and knowledge translation

research

Evidence-informed policies and decision-making is one of the six Core Functions of the Organization.

The evidence and knowledge translation Program of PAHO's Science and Knowledge for Impact Unit promotes the institutionalization of evidence-informed mechanisms and research to improve health decision-making based on high-quality, relevant, up-to-date, transparent, and context-specific scientific evidence.

Evidence and health knowledge translation are fundamental concepts in improving decision-making in health policies and clinical practices.

PAHO is a key player in institutionalizing the generation and use of research evidence as part of its mandate to improve public health. Decision-making processes at all health system levels must be integrated with scientific evidence and health information to achieve evidence-informed health care and policymaking.

What is health evidence?

It refers to reliable scientific information obtained through rigorous research (such as clinical trials, systematic reviews, observational studies, etc.) that serves to inform decisions in public health, medical care and health policies.

What is knowledge translation?

It is "the synthesis, exchange, and application of knowledge by relevant stakeholders to accelerate the benefits of global and local innovation in strengthening health systems and improving people's health."

WHO-EVIPNet

The World Health Organization created the global Evidence-Informed Policy Network (EVIPNet) initiative to promote the systematic use of informed evidence and cutting-edge approaches to knowledge translation to formulate health policies, strengthen health systems and programs, and deliver appropriate services and interventions to those in need.
