For World Water Day, PAHO launches policy brief on Water and Sanitation Policy (only in Spanish)

As part of the World Water Day celebrations, the Sustainable Development and Environmental Health Program (SDE) presented the Policy Brief, Bridging Research and Policy: Water and Sanitation Policy, Human Rights, Equity, and Public Health which was produced by the Research Promotion and Development team at the request of SDE.

Access to water, hygiene and sanitation in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is still a problem and the formulation of public policies based on the human rights approach has a critical role to play in guaranteeing access to the basic levels that allow people not only to live, but to do so with dignity. The lack of water, hygiene and sanitation influences the social and economic development of a country.

This Policy Brief provides an informed answer to those questions related to water and sanitation policies and their impact on equity, human rights, and public health. It will serve to facilitate deliberative dialogues in the countries of the Region that will contribute to finding rational bases for the construction of a new agenda that not only promotes better access to water, hygiene, and sanitation in LAC, but also contemplates the link between the design of public policies and the guarantees of rights.
