The importance of the social determinants of health in public policies

The proceedings of a seminar on the social determinants of health that featured a number of PAHO participants have been published by Mexico's National Academy of Medicine and National Institute of Public Health under the title La importancia de los determinantes sociales de la salud en las políticas públicas ("The importance of the social determinants of health in public policies").

The publication, now available for download (only in Spanish), analyzes the recommendations of WHO's Commission on the Social Determinants of Health and presents experiences and perspectives on these issues from a range of actors at the international, national and regional levels. The presentations also analyze the impact of the social determinants of health on Mexico's efforts to improve the health conditions of its population and reduce health inequities.

The publication presents strategic lines of action for the design of policies addressing the social determinants of health as a basis for health interventions at three levels of government: municipal, state and national.

Participants in the October 2010 seminar included experts from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Population Council of Mexico, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation of Brazil, the Mexican Public Health Society, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Chile's Universidad del Desarrollo, and other academic and research institutions.
