Lima, May 25, 2026 – As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s emergency and disaster response capacities, a five-day intensive training course on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) for Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) concluded today. The course was designed for professionals and technical staff from the Ministry of Health, the Armed Forces Health Service, and EsSalud.
Strengthening the WASH component within EMTs represents a strategic step toward improving the quality of care, reducing the risk of disease transmission, and ensuring appropriate conditions for both patients and health personnel deployed in the field.
The course also included sessions on sanitation in emergencies, latrine selection, stormwater, greywater and blackwater management, hand hygiene promotion, hospital cleaning, laundry, and the management of dead bodies, thereby strengthening teams’ operational preparedness for different response scenarios.
The interinstitutional coordination among the Ministry of Health, the Armed Forces Health Service, and EsSalud reaffirms the country’s commitment to strengthening national capacities in line with the international standards for Emergency Medical Teams promoted by PAHO/WHO.
This activity also benefited from the valuable support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), contributing to enhanced preparedness and response capacities within the health sector in the face of emergencies and disasters.
