cover EpidemicCKD ENIncreasing numbers of young people, in clusters of vulnerable farming communities in several Central American countries, have developed a severe form of kidney failure of uncertain etiology. One of the obstacles to address this problem is the lack of a framework for systematic surveillance of chronic kidney disease, for traditional and non traditional causes (CKDnT) in the Region of the Americas.

"Epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease in Agricultural Communities in Central America. Case definitions, methodological basis and approaches for public health surveillance" is a new PAHO publication aimed to provide guidance to health professionals on how to strengthen or establish ? CKD surveillance with a focus on CKDnT. as part of a broader effort on NCD surveillance.

The publication presents the methodological basis and approaches for public health surveillance and includes the description of clinical and pathological characteristics and the case definitions for CKDnT surveillance. It provides a menu of options on CKDnT surveillance, according to available resources in each country. Surveillance can better identify individuals at risk for, or with CKDnT, who might benefit from interventions to reduce their risks or treatment to better control their disease.
