The PAHO / WHO Country Office recently organized the official handover of 334 vials of Benzathine benzylpenicillin to the Medical Mission Primary Health Care Suriname (MM) and the Regional Health Service (RGD).

As the largest primary health care organizations in the country, they are actively implementing the national Elimination from Mother to Child Transmission (EMTCT) guidelines in their facilities. Data from the past years presents increased numbers of syphilis cases in certain parts of their service areas.

By supporting the organizations with this valuable donation, syphilis treatment can be effectively integrated at the primary health care level, improving access to services at the point of care and reducing treatment delays in the pregnant women with reduced risk of adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes.

At a donation handover ceremony, the RGD was represented by Dr. Aloysius Koendjbiharie. Dr. Koendjbiharie: “This donation will certainly help us to provide the necessary care to those in our service areas. We take into account the Elimination Initiative and we commit to playing an important role in providing treatment to especially the pregnant women. We thank the PAHO for their support.”

PAHO / WHO remains committed to supported Suriname to expand access to essential services and deepen collaboration with relevant actors.
