In order to improve the capacity of communication professionals in the management of information during emergencies in Central America and the Dominican Republic, a workshop was held on September 6 in San Salvador dedicated to Risk Communication and Disaster Prevention. This event was part of the Regional Workshop for the Preparation of communication products organized by the Executive Secretariat of the Council of Ministers of Health of Central America and the Dominican Republic, SE COMISCA.

During the meeting, participants shared their experiences related to information management during past emergencies and analyzed the lessons learned aimed to establish a common strategy and a work plan for the coming years. Furthermore, the situation report formats and tools from PAHO/WHO were shared with the participants and they could get to know the role of communication specialists within the Regional Response Team of PAHO/WHO.

This workshop was attended by communication managers from the Ministries of Health and Social Security Institutions of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Dominican Republic and from organizations like the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP), the INCAP Center for Chronic Diseases (CIIPEC) and the National Institute for Women of Panama. All participants form the Regional Health Communicators Network that is supported and promoted by COMISCA.

Through this regional workshop PAHO/WHO confirms its commitment of continue supporting joint planning processes and the development of common strategies to facilitate the work of communications professionals from different institutions that make up this network and thus strengthen its disaster preparedness in Central America.
