When?
Wednesday 5 February 2025 from 8:00-9:30am EST // 14:00-15:30 CET
Description:
Please join PAHO and the WHO GIS Centre for Health for the first Knowledge Series of 2025 for a deep-dive on how geospatial analytics are being used to improve operational population estimates in Bolivia to support their national immunization programme. This 90-minute webinar will be delivered with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish.
PAHO collaborated with Bolivia's National Immunization Program to estimate the total population of the country, with stratification by age and 5-year age group in each catchment area, using multiple layers of open-source data from geospatial and population sources. These estimates were validated through a micro census in five municipalities. Satellite images from Meta and WorldPop 2020 matched field data. Meta images are particularly accurate in estimating sex distribution. Field data indicate there are fewer children younger than 5 years than both sources had estimated. PAHO's estimates are used to improve the reach and effectiveness of vaccination operations in Bolivia.

GIS Knowledge Series - Tools and technology
As part of the WHO GIS Centre for Health’s training, advocacy, and capacity development efforts to reach all the Member States, the GIS Centre invites experts who developed datasets or specialize in certain technical aspects of GIS to speak at one of our monthly webinars.
The objective of the monthly webinars or ‘Knowledge Series’ is to give the audience an introduction to geospatial data and tools and to demonstrate how programs can benefit from these. Guest speakers demonstrate the use of the GIS tools and foundational layers that enrich their work. Oftentimes, this is supplemented by use cases of geospatial datasets that are applied in the 'real world'.
Knowledge Series offer an opportunity for our colleagues across the world to interact with experts on data-driven health geographies and to network with each other as well as of course drive forward access to geospatial solutions across a wide spectrum of health topics that the participants are engaged in.
