Context

Cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to be the leading causes of death worldwide, even though 30%-40% of cancer cases can be prevented through prevention policies and early detection services. To promote evidence-based interventions to prevent cancer and other NCDs, PAHO, together with IARC and SLACOM, launched the Latin American and Caribbean Code Against Cancer in 2023. The “Code” includes recommendations for the general population and healthcare providers on how to reduce cancer risk, and it is a tool that meets the Best Buys for NCD prevention and control recommendations from PAHO/WHO.

During the launch of the Code, the 17 evidence-based recommendations and the tools available to disseminate them were reviewed, with participation from civil society and government representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, the scientific evidence for the recommendations and a virtual course on the Code have been published.
