Port of Spain, 22 May 2023 (PAHO/WHO) - On Tuesday, May 9, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) launched the three-day Caribbean Workshop on National Action Plans for Antimicrobial Resistance at the Hilton Hotel. The three-day workshop aims to address global health and economic challenges related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to foster a coordinated response. The workshop is part of the Triangular Project, involving the Argentine Republic, PAHO/WHO, CARICOM, and focuses on strengthening detection of AMR and surveillance in CARICOM countries. The workshop will facilitate the review and assessment of National Action Plans (NAPs), knowledge sharing, and the development of a sub-regional strategy for AMR containment among Caribbean countries. Professionals from Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago will participate in the regional workshop.

The Honourable Minister of Health, Terrance Deyalsingh, gave the feature address. Dr Erica Wheeler, PAHO/WHO Country Representative, His Excellency Marcelo Suarez Salvia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Argentine Republic to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Ms Alison Drayton, Assistant Secretary-General, Human and Social Development CARICOM, Mr Dead Chambliss, PAHO/WHO Sub-regional Program Director, Caribbean, and Dr Nathalie El Omeiri, Advisor, Antimicrobial Resistance Response PAHO/WHO delivered opening remarks at the ceremony.
