DescriptionNoncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death and disability in the Region of the Americas, as it is estimated that they cause approximately 6 million deaths per year and that roughly 240 million people live with an NCD. International frameworks have established a series of targets to reduce premature mortality from NCDs through health promotion activities, the reduction of risk factors, and the strengthening of the capacity of primary health care systems to manage NCDs. The objective of this Action Plan on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2025–2030 is to support Member States in accelerating the measures necessary to achieve global NCD targets. Recognizing that addressing NCDs requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, involving multisectoral partnerships, this action plan outlines three broad strategic lines of action to be implemented during its period of validity (2025–2030). Given the broad scope of NCD prevention and control and the timeframe of this plan, the topics focus exclusively on those global NCD targets that include shared risk factors (tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity) and the four major NCDs: cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases. |
