 Context

Diabetes is a significant and complex public health challenge. Over the past decades, both the prevalence, mortality, and disability from diabetes have increased significantly in the Region of the Americas, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Chronic kidney disease, one of the main complications of diabetes, also shows an expansive increase. Consequently, the Region is currently the one with the highest burden of diabetes in the world. The alarming increase in the burden of diabetes and kidney disease attributed to diabetes translates essential gaps in health care, both in access and quality of care, making evident the urgency to strengthen the response of health services, especially at the first level of care.
