The transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11) represents a key step toward strengthening the quality, integration, and interoperability of health data within Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems and Information Systems for Health (IS4H) across the Region of the Americas.
In this session, Sergio Guiñez Molinos, Head of the Biomedical Informatics Laboratory at the School of Medicine of the University of Talca (Chile), will share Chile’s experience in the implementation of ICD-11, with a focus on the critical elements required to advance the digital transformation of health information systems.
Concrete steps for migrating from previous versions of ICD to ICD-11 will be discussed, including:
- governance strategies and regulatory frameworks;
- adjustments and adaptations of information systems;
- workforce training and institutional change management;
- lessons learned and operational recommendations.
This event is part of the thematic area on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, which aims to promote the exchange of good practices and strengthen technical and institutional capacities to improve the quality of morbidity and mortality data across the Region.
General Objective
To strengthen technical and institutional capacities to use ICD-11 as the central semantic standard within CRVS systems and Information Systems for Health (IS4H), improving the quality and integration of data and supporting informed decision-making. Specific objective of the session: To present the key elements and phases of the ICD-11 implementation process, illustrated through the experience of Chile, and to discuss relevant lessons learned for other countries in the Region.
