Background

We invite you to participate in the online seminar, "ANACoD3 promoting the analysis of mortality for the achievement of SDG 3". This important event arises within the framework of collaboration between Vital Strategies, Inc. and PAHO/WHO and is part of the PAHO Data for Health Collaboration project, aimed at supporting PAHO's regional priorities in strengthening civil registration and vital statistics systems and analysis and use of vital statistics for effective decision-making in public health.

Within the framework of this project, the Department of Evidence and Intelligence for Action in Health, (EIH), with Vital Strategies will strengthen institutional capacities of the national teams for mortality analysis, prioritizing the analysis of the mortality pattern and quality indicators, promoting the use of the ANACoD31 tool updated in 2021 by the WHO.

The ANACoD3 online tool helps the user to carry out a comprehensive and systematic analysis of mortality and cause of death data and is characterized by automatically tabulating the data and presenting basic mortality metrics in tables and figures. It highlights possible inconsistencies and errors in the data and estimates the completeness of the database. ANACoD3 generates indicators that reveal potential data quality issues, as well as a series of comparable indicators that include sex- and age-specific mortality rates, crude death rates, life expectancy at birth, causes of death distributed by broad groups of Global Burden of Disease: i) Communicable, maternal, perinatal and nutritional conditions, ii) Non-communicable diseases and iii) External causes, the 20 leading causes of death and the percentage of ill-defined causes of death.

Additionally, ANACoD3 is part of the implementation package of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems - Eleventh revision (ICD-11)2
and can process databases coded with ICD-10 and ICD-11.

The purpose of this seminar is to disseminate the main features of the tool, results, requirements for its operation and demonstrate its user friendliness. In addition, a successful experience of its application by a country in the region. Furthermore, the objectives of the collaborative project and work proposed for countries will be presented together with the technical cooperation so that, in addition to training in the use of the tool, the analytical capacities of the national teams are strengthened.

The seminar is geared to i) national teams of the statistics and information areas of the Ministries of Health and National Statistics Institutes; ii) teams responsible for analysis, surveillance, indicator monitoring and planning and various users such as researchers from national and international agencies and academic institutions. After the seminar, countries will have opportunity to express interest in continuing in the follow-up phases of the PAHO Data for Health Collaboration project, in which they may receive technical support from PAHO/EIH and Vital Strategies.
