The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Inter-American Comission of Women (CIM/OAS) celebrated International Women's Day 2010 on March 12 with the theme "Gender Equality in Health: A Right for Adolescents." OAS ambassadors, PAHO staff, partners of other UN, and civil society organization joined to celebrate this important event.

During the event, Dr. Mirta Roses, PAHO's Director, introduced and awarded the three Best Practices that incorporate a Gender Equality Perspective in Health of Adolescents and Youth, selected from over 71 submissions to a regional contest.

BEST PRACTICE WINNERS 2010

The three winning Best Practices on gender and adolescent's health from the Americas were:

El Salvador: "Reducing maternal and neonatal mortality among youth and adolescents", Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare and PWR EL SALVADOR.

Argentina: "Reducing the risks and dangers in reproductive and sexual health in the context of comprehensive care of adolescents", Agudos Cosme Argerich General Hospital and Foundation for Adolescent Health 2000 (FUSA 2000).

Brazil: "Programs H and M: Engaging young men and empowering young women to promote gender equity and health", Promundo.
