Tegucigalpa, March 17, 2026 (PAHO/WHO) — Honduras is taking an important step toward protecting the health of its population with support from the Pandemic Fund and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), strengthening its health security through concrete actions aimed at improving preparedness for future health emergencies.
As part of this effort, the Institutional Workshop for Prioritizing Actions under the National Health Security Plan 2026–2030 was held within the framework of the Pandemic Fund Project.
The workshop brought together strategic teams from the Ministry of Health, with technical support from PAHO, to jointly define which actions should be prioritized, where available resources should be directed, and which capacities need to be strengthened to prevent, detect, and respond effectively to outbreaks, epidemics, and other public health emergencies.
The exercise was informed by recent national assessments that identified strengths and areas for improvement in emergency preparedness, helping translate technical findings into practical decisions and clear priorities.
During the opening session, Ana Emilia Solís, PAHO/WHO Representative in Honduras, highlighted that the National Health Security Plan provides a roadmap for turning evidence into action and coordinating government institutions to respond in a timely and integrated manner to potential health crises, thereby protecting the population.
Ángela Salgado, the Ministry of Health’s official focal point for the Pandemic Fund, noted that the process demonstrates the country’s ability to organize, optimize resources, and strengthen the confidence of the international community—key elements for ensuring the effective and sustainable implementation of the Plan.
In his opening remarks, Homer Mejía, representing the Ministry of Health, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to advancing health security through leadership and coordination across sectors.
Through a series of working groups, participants identified short- and medium-term priority actions, analyzed existing gaps, and discussed financing needs, laying the groundwork for an operational plan that will support orderly and strategic implementation.
With support from the Pandemic Fund, Honduras is strengthening its preparedness for future emergencies and contributing to improved health security for its population, recognizing that protecting health requires planning, investment, and sustained action long before a crisis occurs.
