PAHO advances in Belize on Medical Waste Management across three hospitals in the country

Hospital solid waste management

Belize City, Belize, 22 May 2026 ― The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) of Belize, conducted a technical mission to support the strengthening of medical waste management systems in three key healthcare facilities: Northern Regional Hospital, San Ignacio Community Hospital and the new hospital under construction in San Pedro Town located in Ambergris Caye.

Proper waste management is critical because while only about 15% of healthcare waste is hazardous, it requires specialized, low-carbon treatment like autoclaving or incineration to safeguard public health and the environment.

The new facility in San Pedro is expected serve up to 40,000 people during peak tourism seasons. Because its wide range of surgical and diagnostic services will generate diverse waste streams, including pathological waste unsuitable for standard autoclaving, PAHO is providing technical guidance to identify the safest, lowest-carbon combination of treatment technologies. This planning carefully balances operational capacity with environmental safeguards and proximity to residential areas.

In parallel, the mission included an assessment of existing autoclave sterilization systems at the Northern Regional and San Ignacio Community hospitals. PAHO’s review aims to evaluate equipment functionality and suitability; strengthen day-to-day operational procedures; and support effective commissioning to minimize infection risks.

"The waste management mission was critical to the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the health sector, as proper medical waste management is essential to preventing infections and protecting healthcare workers and communities. Selecting the best technology is important for preserving the environment, complying with regulations, and ensuring safe and sustainable healthcare delivery", said Ms. Lizette Bell, Deputy Director of Hospital Service and Allied Health and Chief Nursing Officer.

This initiative is part of PAHO’s broader regional effort to help countries build sustainable, low-carbon healthcare systems that effectively manage environmental and public health risks.
