Countries oriented in certifying and coding for COVID-19 Mortality

Bridgetown, Barbados, 08 October 2020 (PAHO/WHO) - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) collaborated to orient participants on the International Classification of Disease, tenth edition (ICD-10) coding for COVID-19 mortality.

This second orientation session brought together fifty-eight (58) medical doctors, epidemiologists, surveillance officers, health information systems (HIS) officers and ICD coders from Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries. 

Moderator for the session Dr Jean Marie Rwangabwoba, PAHO/WHO Advisor Health Surveillance, Disease Prevention and Control, opened the webinar by briefing participants on the COVID-19 situation.

Experts from PAHO and CARPHA shared the latest information on ICD-10 coding for COVID-19 mortality.  Presentations were delivered by PAHO Advisor for Health Information and Analysis, Dr Vilma Gawryszewski on the international orientation for certify and coding COVID-19 and CARPHA Senior Technical Officer, Ms Angela Hinds provided a very comprehensive report on the correct completion of a medical death certificate and the selection of the underlying cause of death.
