On Wednesday, 20 July 2016, PAHO will held a webinar to discuss the fundamentals of road safety and launch the report "Road Safety in the Americas", which includes the latest information on the topic, with particular attention to the current status of implementation of legislation related to the main strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 3.6: halve the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020.
Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are one of the leading causes of death and disability both around the world and in the Region. Globally, they are the main cause of death among people 15-29 years of age. In the Americas, is estimated that the RTI death rate is 15.9 per 100,000 individuals. This burden is not equally distributed and is estimated that the proportion of motorcycle deaths rose from 15% to 20% of the total road traffic deaths between 2010 and 2013.
