Introduction 1. It is imperative to work to eliminate infectious diseases for which cost effective tools exists and still afflict the poorest and marginalized people of the Region of the Americas. It is necessary to make a determined effort to go forward in eliminating or drastically reducing the burden and the inequality generated by these neglected and other poverty-related diseases by 2015. 2. In Latin America and the Caribbean, around 127 million people live in poverty, and this high figure helps to bring about a greater burden of some infectious diseases.
