Bridgetown, Barbados, 12 August 2025 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries (ECC) is celebrating the tremendous contributions of youth in advancing health and well-being across the region.
Over the years, PAHO-ECC has worked closely with dynamic youth groups and advocates, building strong partnerships that have shaped conversations on some of the most pressing health challenges of our time.
In our recent work together, topics such as mental health and suicide prevention have been central. Youth voices have shaped conversations, influenced policies, and driven creative approaches to complex challenges. Organizations like Let’s Unpack It, Healthy Caribbean Youth, and the Ashley Lashley Foundation are doing commendable work, and we proudly celebrate their efforts.
“While it is often said that “the youth are our future,” the truth is that they are already here, making meaningful contributions today. From challenging social norms to finding innovative solutions, they are at the forefront of efforts to address pressing public health issues,” said Dr. Amalia Del Riego, PAHO/WHO Representative for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries.
Some noteworthy collaborations with the youth include:
- World Suicide Prevention Day 2023 – Youth advocates Pierre Cooke Jr. and Chelsea Jordan represented Barbados during a PAHO regional webinar, sharing their experiences and perspectives with audiences across the Americas.
- Beyond the Box Education discussion – We hosted a candid conversation with students which explored the societal and cultural factors contributing to teen mental health challenges, generating solutions schools can adopt.
- Women’s Youth Football “All About Me” Session – A community engagement activity promoting mental well-being, managing bullying, and women’s health among members of the Barbados Women’s Football Association youth arm.
- Youth Forum: “Let’s Talk: Bridging the Gap” – Held on May 30, 2025, this hybrid event was designed and led by youth, bringing together participants across the region for open dialogue on mental health.
- World Health Day and Universal Health Coverage 2025 – Youth advocate Ashley Lashley shared her journey from unhealthy eating habits in secondary school to leading initiatives for health equity and climate change.
- Pathways to Wellness video 2025 - This video highlights the successes and accomplishments of the Barbados Mental Health program transformation and demonstrate the importance of prioritizing mental health.
This International Youth Day, PAHO-ECC recognizes and applauds these young leaders for their commitment to building healthier, more resilient communities. By empowering youth voices, the region moves closer to achieving equitable health for all.
