Bridgetown, Barbados, 24 November 2025 (PAHO/WHO)- The Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) will host the inaugural virtual award ceremony for the PAHO Caribbean Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Leadership Award established in memory of Dr Suzan McLennon-Miguel on Tuesday, 25 November 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (AST). The ceremony will mark a milestone in recognising outstanding Caribbean leadership and innovation in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
Nominations for the 2025 award have now closed, and the recipient of the first Suzan McLennon-Miguel Caribbean AMR Leadership Award will be announced during the ceremony. The award honours individuals or organizations demonstrating exceptional commitment to advancing the One Health approach, which links human, animal, and environmental health, to combat AMR across the region.
Established in memory of Dr. Suzan McLennon-Miguel, a Jamaican veterinarian and public health leader whose career spanned more than three decades, the award celebrates her remarkable legacy of compassion, service, and advocacy. A pioneer in food safety, disaster response, and AMR awareness, Dr. McLennon-Miguel was also the founder of “Doc Sue’s Happy Rooms,” spaces in Jamaican hospitals that brought comfort and creativity to children during recovery.
The award was launched during World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2024 and will be presented annually to recognise exemplary Caribbean contributions in AMR prevention, policy, education, or research. The winner will receive a commemorative plaque and an immersive visit to PAHO Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to engage with AMR experts and share their work on a regional stage.
