Guatemala, 29 January 2025 - In a region marked by effort and hope, trachoma elimination is changing lives. Through eyelid surgery, dozens of people have recovered not only their vision, but also their quality of life. This effort was made possible by collaboration between the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), with the support of the Government of Canada.

Success stories: overcoming disease and bringing about change

In the rural communities of Guineales, in the municipality of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, department of Sololá, patients now see a future full of opportunities. At 66 years of age, Manuela Suy Yac explains how the operation changed her life: "Today I feel very grateful, satisfied, and happy. Now I can do my daily tasks. I used to feel a lot of discomfort and pain."

These interventions not only have an impact at the individual level, but also in communities. Improved eye health enables people to resume their economic and family activities, significantly transforming the social environment.

The power of collaboration

These campaigns would not be successful without the joint efforts of local health teams and community leaders, as well as the technical and financial support of international partners. "This work is an example of how cooperation can contribute to the elimination of diseases that disproportionately affect the most vulnerable communities," said a PAHO/WHO representative.

Trachoma, a disease that mainly affects areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation, is on its way to being eliminated in Guatemala. The progress made demonstrates that investing in public health not only saves lives but empowers communities to build a more prosperous future.

A trachoma-free future

Through these initiatives, Guatemala is reaffirming its commitment to eye health and the well-being of its population. The transformation of lives like Manuela's is a reminder of what can be achieved when efforts are focused on those who need it most.

"I am free of trachoma" concludes Manuela, her smile reflecting the impact of this initiative. Trachoma elimination not only restores vision, but also hope.
