Washington, DC, 7 October, 2025 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) delivered the tutored training program ‘Improving the competencies of nursing and midwifery faculty for hybrid teaching and clinical training’, with the participation of 23 faculty from 9 Caribbean countries. The training was conducted virtually from September 1 to October 5, 2025, and brought together participants from Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts-Nevis, Saint Vincent & The Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago.
The course had a practical approach, guiding faculty to design and implement simulated practice scenarios, plan hybrid teaching strategies, and apply best practices in assessment and feedback. The initiative was supported by PAHO Collaborating Centres and featured live sessions led by international experts, marked by dynamic discussions and exchange of experiences. In addition, participants engaged in practical activities on the Virtual Campus for Public Health (VCPH), PAHO's educational platform.
“Faculty training is essential to address the shortage of nurses and midwives in the Caribbean and to strengthen health systems. This initiative is part of our broader technical cooperation with countries to ensure equitable access to care and prepare health professionals for current and future health systems challenges”, said Benjamin Puertas, Unit Chief, Human Resources for Health, PAHO.
“This course represents the mission of the Virtual Campus for Public Health: to expand access to quality training for health professionals in the Region of the Americas. By combining theory with practical tools, we ensure that participants can immediately apply what they learn in their teaching and clinical practice”, said Gabriel Listovsky, head of the Virtual Campus Special Program, PAHO.
“This course equipped participants with practical and applicable tools to strengthen the quality of education within their institutions. By fostering innovation in teaching and building faculty capacity, we are directly contributing to the development of a more sustainable, and better-prepared nursing and midwifery workforce”, said Bruna Moreno, International Consultant and Course Coordinator, PAHO.
This initiative adds to PAHO’s ongoing efforts to strengthen nursing and midwifery education in the Region of the Americas, within the framework of the PAHO’s Policy on the Health Workforce 2030.
