Arboviral Diseases

Arboviral diseases (or arboviroses) are viral infections transmitted to humans through the bite of arthropods, primarily mosquitoes. These include dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Oropouche.

In the Americas, these diseases represent a significant public health challenge due to the geographic expansion of their vectors, rapid urbanization, the proliferation of breeding sites, and the simultaneous circulation of multiple arboviruses. These factors increase the risk of outbreaks and epidemics.

Currently, dengue is the most common arboviral disease in the Region of the Americas and one of the leading causes of morbidity associated with these infections, with a growing impact on health systems and affected communities.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and its Member States have worked together to prevent and control these diseases. Based on that experience, the Integrated Management Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Arboviral Diseases (EGI-Arbovirus) promotes a comprehensive approach that combines epidemiological surveillance, diagnosis, clinical care, risk communication, community participation, and vector control to reduce the health, social, and economic impact of arboviral diseases in the Region.
