  • 28 February 2020: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Sarampion

    Between 1 January and 22 February 2020, 6 countries have reported confirmed cases in the Region of the Americas: Argentina (45 cases, including 1 death), Brazil (338 cases, including 1 death), Canada (1 case), Chile (2 cases), the United States of America (5 cases), and Uruguay (2 cases).

     

  • 24 January 2020: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between 1 January 2019 and 24 January 2020, a total of 20,430 confirmed cases of measles, including 19 deaths, have been reported in 14 countries and territories of the Region of the Americas: Argentina (114 cases), the Bahamas (3 cases), Brazil (18,073 cases, including 15 deaths), Canada (113 cases), Chile (12 cases), Colombia (242 cases, including 1 death), Costa Rica (10 cases), Cuba (1 case), Curaçao (1 case), Mexico (20 cases), Peru (2 cases), the United States of America (1,282 cases), Uruguay (9 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (548 cases, including 3 deaths) (Figure 1). Brazil accounts for 88% of the total confirmed cases reported in the Americas.

    Between 1 January and 12 December 2019, a total of 15,802 confirmed cases of measles, including 18 deaths, have been reported in 14 countries and territories of the Region of the Americas: Argentina (85 cases), the Bahamas (3 cases), Brazil (13,489 cases, including 15 deaths), Canada (113 cases), Chile (11 cases), Colombia (230 cases, including 1 death), Costa Rica (10 cases), Cuba (1 case), Curaçao (1 case), Mexico (20 cases), Peru (2 cases), the United States of America (1,276 cases), Uruguay (9 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (552 cases, including 2 deaths).

     

  • 1 November 2019: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between 1 January and 31 October 2019, a total of 11,487 confirmed cases of measles, including 15 deaths, have been reported in 14 countries and territories of the Region of the Americas: Argentina (38 cases), the Bahamas (2 cases1), Brazil (9,304 cases), Canada (112 cases), Chile (10 cases), Colombia (212 cases), Costa Rica (10 cases), Cuba (1 case), Curaçao (1 case), Mexico (16 cases)2, Peru (2 cases), the United States of America (1,250 cases), Uruguay (9 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (520 cases).

     

  • 25 September 2019: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    SarampionBetween 1 January and 25 September 2019, a total of 6,541 confirmed cases of measles, including 5 deaths, have been reported in 14 countries and territories of the Region of the Americas: Argentina (12 cases), the Bahamas (1 case), Brazil (4,476 cases), Canada (111 cases), Chile (8 cases), Colombia (203 cases), Costa Rica (10 cases), Cuba (1 case), Curaçao (1 case), Mexico (17 cases), Peru (2 cases), the United States of America (1,241 cases), Uruguay (9 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (449 cases).

     

  • 7 August 2019: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between 1 January and 7 August 2019, a total of 2,927 confirmed cases of measles, including one death, have been reported in 14 countries and territories of the Region of the Americas: Argentina (5 cases), the Bahamas (1 case), Brazil (1,045 cases), Canada (82 cases), Chile (4 cases), Colombia (175 cases), Costa Rica (10 cases), Cuba (1 case), Curaçao (1 case), Mexico (3 cases), Peru (2
    cases), the United States of America (1,172 cases), Uruguay (9 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (417 cases).

     

  • 18 June 2019: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between 1 January and 18 June of 2019, a total of 1,722 cases of measles have been reported in 13 countries of the Region of the Americas: Argentina (5 cases), the Bahamas (1 case), Brazil (122 cases), Canada (65 cases), Chile (4 cases), Colombia (125 cases), Costa Rica (10 cases), Cuba (1 case), the United States of America (1,044 cases), Mexico (2 cases), Peru (2 cases), Uruguay (9 cases) and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (332 cases). No fatal cases have been reported in the same period.

     

  • 17 May 2019 - Epidemiological Update on Measles

    In 2019 to date, 12 countries in the Region have reported confirmed measles cases: Argentina, the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, the United States of America, Uruguay, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. No fatal cases have been reported in 2019 in the Region. There was one additional confirmed measles case reported in the Region onboard a cruise ship that sailed between Aruba and Curacao.

     

  • 18 April 2019: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    In 2018, twelve countries in the Region of the Americas reported confirmed measles cases, whereas in April 2019 to date, there are already 12 countries in the Region that have reported confirmed measles cases: Argentina, the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, the United States of America, Uruguay, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. No fatal cases have been reported in the Region in 2019, while in 2018 there were two countries, Brazil and Venezuela, that reported fatal cases.

     

  • 4 March 2019: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 9 of 2019, ten countries in the Region of the Americas have reported confirmed cases occurring between December 2018 and February 2019: Argentina, the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, the United States of America, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. No fatal cases have been reported in 2019.

     

  • 18 January 2019: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    In 2018 there were 12 countries in the Americas that reported confirmed measles cases, of which two reported deaths (Brazil and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela). As of epidemiological week (EW) 2 of 2019, 6 countries reported having confirmed cases between December 2018 and January 2019: Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the United States of America, and Venezuela.

  • 30 November 2018: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    In 2018, as of 30 November, a total of 16,039 confirmed measles cases, including 86 deaths, have been reported in 12 countries of the Region of the Americas: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Argentina (14 cases), Brazil (9,898 cases, including 13 deaths), Canada (27 cases), Chile (2 cases), Colombia (171 cases), Ecuador (19 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (5 cases), Peru (38 cases), the United States of America (220 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (5,6431 cases, including 73 deaths). Chile is now part of the list of countries that have reported confirmed cases of measles in 2018.

  • 24 October 2018: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Since the 21 September 2018 Epidemiological Update on Measles, an additional 1,462 confirmed measles cases were reported, including 13 deaths, in 7 countries of the Region (3 cases in Argentina, 457 cases and 2 deaths in Brazil, 3 cases in Canada, 44 cases in Colombia, 17 cases in Peru, 18 cases in the United States, and 920 cases and 11 deaths in Venezuela).

  • 21 September 2018: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    In 2018, as of 21 September, a total of 6,629 confirmed cases of measles, including 72 deaths, have been reported in 11 countries of the Region of the Americas: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Argentina (11 cases), Brazil (1,735 cases, including 10 deaths), Canada  (22 cases), Colombia (85 cases), Ecuador (19 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (5 cases), Peru (21 cases), the United States of America (124 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (4,605 cases, including 62 deaths).

  • 20 August 2018: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 33 of 2018, a total of 5,004 confirmed measles cases, including 68 deaths, were reported in 11 countries in the Region of the Americas: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Argentina (8 cases), Brazil (1,237 cases, including 6 deaths), Canada (19 cases), Colombia (60 cases), Ecuador (17 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (5 cases), Peru (4 cases), the United States (107 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (3,545 cases, including 62 deaths).

  • 20 July 2018: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 28 of 2018, 2,472 confirmed measles cases were reported by 11 countries in the Region of the Americas: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Argentina (5 cases), Brazil (677 cases), Canada (19 cases), Colombia (40 cases), Ecuador (17 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (5 cases), Peru (3 cases), the United States (91 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (1,613 cases).

    Between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 22 of 2018, 11 countries reported 1,685 confirmed cases of measles in the Region of the Americas: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Argentina (3 cases), Brazil (114 cases), Canada (11 cases), Colombia (26 cases), Ecuador (12 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (4 cases), Peru (2 cases), the United States (84 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (1,427 cases). This number exceeds what was reported in 2017, when 4 countries in the Region reported 895 confirmed cases: Argentina (3 cases), Canada (45 cases), the United States of America (120 cases), and Venezuela (727 cases).

    In 2018, between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 18, there were 11 countries that reported 1,115 confirmed cases in the Region of the Americas: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Argentina (3 cases), Brazil (104 cases), Canada (9 cases), Colombia (21 cases), Ecuador (3 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (4 cases), Peru (2 cases), the United States (63 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (904 cases). This number exceeds
    what was reported in 2017, when 4 countries in the Region reported 895 confirmed cases: Argentina (3 cases), Canada (45 cases), the United States of America (120 cases), and Venezuela (727 cases).

  • 6 April 2018: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Since the last Epidemiological Update for measles1 issued by the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) on 16 March 2018, two additional countries in the Region of the Americas have confirmed measles cases: Argentina (1 case) and Ecuador (1 case). This brings the total number of countries with confirmed measles cases since the beginning of 2018 until epidemiological week (EW) 14 to 11.

    In 2017, four countries in the Region of the Americas reported confirmed cases of measles: Argentina, Canada, the United States of America, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. In the first three months of 2018, there were eight countries in the Region reporting confirmed cases: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Brazil (8 cases), Canada (3 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (1 case), Peru (1 case), the United States (11 cases), and Venezuela (159 cases).

  • 6 February 2018: Measles - Epidemiological Update

    Between November 2016 and December 2017, countries of the WHO European Region reported 17,584 measles cases; 91% (n=15,978) of these cases were reported in 2017. 1 In this period, the highest cumulative incidence rate was reported in Romania (291.5 cases per 1 million population), followed by Italy (83.2 cases per 1 million population), and Tajikistan (77.2 cases per 1 million population).

    Between October 2016 and September 2017, countries of the European Region reported 15,941 confirmed measles cases; 86% (n=13,712) of these cases were reported in 2017. In this period, the highest incidence was reported in Romania (252.4 cases per 1 million population), followed by Italy (82.4 cases per 1 million population) and Tajikistan (77.3 cases per 1 million population). In 2017, there were 20 measles deaths, including 10 reported in Romania.

    Between September 2016 and August 2017, countries of the European Region reported 15,516 confirmed measles cases; 83% (n=12,921) of these cases were reported in 2017. In this period, the highest incidence was reported in Romania (259 cases per 1 million population), followed by Italy (80.5 cases per 1 million population) and Tajikistan (77 cases per 1 million population).

  • 22 September 2017: Measles – Epidemiological Update

    From early January 2016 to late July 2017, countries of the European Region reported 14,591 confirmed measles cases; 64% (n=9,386) of these cases were reported in 2017 alone.

  • 4 May 2017: Measles – Epidemiological Alert

    Between epidemiological weeks (EW) 1 and 17 of 2017, 84 confirmed cases were reported in three countries of the Americas: Argentina (2 cases), Canada (39 cases), and the United States (43 cases).

  • 28 April 2011: Measles or Rubella – recommendations to the travelers

    Epidemiological AlertsPAHO also recommends that any resident of the Americas planning to travel to other regions of the world should be protected against measles and rubella prior to departing on their trip. Travelers who have not been vaccinated against measles and rubella are at risk of contracting these diseases when visiting countries where the viruses are currently circulating. Special efforts should be made to ensure vaccination for women of childbearing age in order to prevent possible infections caused by the rubella virus during pregnancy.

  • 2 September 2010: Measles – situation in the americas

    Epidemiological AlertsDuring this year, measles cases, imported and imported related, have been registered in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the United States, and French Guyana. From January to 21 August, 2010, 143 confirmed measles cases have been registered, 40 of which were imported, 37 imported-related, and 66 which are still under investigation or whose source of infection is unknown.

  • Measles imported cases in Santa Catarina, Brazil - Vol. 1, No. 25—24 December 2003

    During epidemiological week (EW) 51 (14th-20th December, 2003), Brazil's Health Surveillance Secretariat (Secretaria de Vigilância em Saúde, SVS) reported two cases of measles from Blumenau, Santa Catarina.
