Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 17 February 2016 (PAHO/WHO) — The Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, provided a briefing for the Council of Ministers of Health of Central America and the Dominican Republic (COMISCA) this week on actions PAHO is taking to fight the epidemic of Zika virus in the Americas.

"We know that Zika, like dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever, is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Preventing mosquito bites and reducing mosquito populations are the most effective control measures," said Etienne in a recorded message. "As research efforts continue, we must take rational public health measures to reduce the chances of infection and the level of rear in our populations."
