Bridgetown, Barbados, 24 July 2026 (PAHO/WHO) - The PAHO/WHO Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries has joined the people of Barbados in mourning the passing of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, paying tribute to one of the nation's most distinguished sons and an enduring icon of Caribbean excellence.

On behalf of the Organization, Interim PAHO/WHO Representative for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries, Dr. Prabhjot Singh, signed the national condolence book, extending heartfelt sympathies to Sir Garfield's family and to the Government and people of Barbados during this period of national mourning.

Recognized around the world as one of cricket's greatest players, Sir Garfield Sobers was admired not only for his extraordinary achievements on the field but also for his humility, sportsmanship and dedication to excellence. His remarkable career brought international recognition to Barbados and inspired countless people throughout the Caribbean and beyond.

Paying tribute to Sir Garfield's life and legacy, Dr. Singh said:

"Sir Garfield Sobers united people through sport and inspired generations with his extraordinary talent, humility and commitment to excellence. On behalf of the PAHO/WHO Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries, I extend our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Barbados as we honour the life and legacy of a true Caribbean legend."

As Barbados prepares to honour Sir Garfield Sobers during a State Service celebrating his remarkable life and legacy, the PAHO/WHO Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries stands in solidarity with the nation in remembering an individual whose influence transcended sport and whose achievements continue to inspire people across the Caribbean and around the world.
